So many wonderful stories of this weekends adventures (and more to cull from the story box) For myself one favorite moment was making a 31 bid in a single trick Paul Harding bid 31 in aces and we were playing Megan and her father Logan Burns Logan had 1:5, 1:1, and 5:5 Paul punts low trump out of the gate and Logan takes it with 1:5 and could have led 1:1 back but instead leads 5:5 and I see that will set us so I play 0:5 (I also have 4 5s) Megan is void 5s so she throws 6:4 on it and Paul trumps with 1:4 That's count and the hand is over Jody Badum has a similar story of a time his partner was 3 trumped the foe leads 0:5, Jody knows that will set them so he piles on with 6:4, the other foe (with the 3 trumps) has to play 5:5 and then the bidder trumps with 3:2. Also 31 in one trick. Mildred Rother Scherbel stopped by to visit with her sister Janice Rother Satsky who lives in Hallettsville and swung by to say hi (and brought DQ burgers but they didn't put the fries in - typical) Some highlights were going 84 down 6-4 with 2:2, 2:6, 0:0, 4:4, 5:5, 6:6, and 6:0 Went in deuces, all the trumps fell on the first 2 tricks, 4:4 pulled 6:4, 6:5 fell on 5:5 and the 6:6 pulled the rest so 6:0 walked "two trumping an 84? Ballsy" - opponent Tied the game and we won the next mark to win Another less successful 84 gambit was down 6-4 I had 5:5, 5:6, 5:4, 0:0, 1:1, 4:4, 4:3 And Paul had two fours and 4:6 Then the opponent to my left played 0:5 when I played 5:5 and the other two players were both void 5s (according to Glen Porter being 4 trumped is a 1% chance of happening - Texas42.org has the probability charts) Asshat In the round robin we were 3-2 and needed a win to make the winners bracket Tied at 4-4 our opponent bid 84 and Paul and I both reluctantly passed. Fortunately I held deuces and he was trying to walk deuces and I set him so we went up 6-4 In the rubber hand his partner bid 35 so I went 36 I had 0:0, 0:6, 0:2, 3:1, 5:4, 1:1, 4:4 I played 0:0 and the opponent to my left and Paul play a blank Then 0:6 and opponent plays 0:4 and Paul gives me 6:4 Ruh roh shaggy For has me 3 deep in blanks with the 0:5 Guaranteed to win a trick, the lead and a nickel And I bid 36 I play the 4:4 and foe has a 4 off and Paul gives me 4:1 So it's suicide time, punt the 5:4 For has another 5 and Paul has 5:5 He then leads 6:6 and it goes around then he leads 6:5 The foe to my right plays 3:2 and I'm like "we're dead, no way the other foe has another 6. He will trump this with 0:5 and we're set" He had another 6 He wins the last trick with the only count being his 0:5 and I made my 36 when I was 3 trumped in blanks with the foe having 0:5 That was me using all of my clean living luck up in one go So I did get clipped first round of consolation In game 3 tied 5-5 we lost the last 2 marks and the dominoes told me to build a camera table (so I did that) Another epic Hallettsville state championship won by a team from Deer Park TX who doesn't play the tourney circuit (Tom Fry & John Harrison) See you at the tables
